Citrus spiny whitefly
Aleurocanthus spiniferus
Description
The Citrus spiny whitefly (Aleurocanthus spiniferus) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. Recognized as a dangerous quarantine organism, this species is highly invasive and capable of causing severe economic losses in various horticultural sectors globally.
This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking more than 90 plant species. The primary hosts are citrus crops such as lemons, oranges, and mandarins, but it also infests grapes, roses, pears, and various other ornamental plants. Its ability to adapt to different hosts makes it a difficult challenge for growers to manage effectively.
The life cycle consists of egg, three larval stages, puparium, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs in characteristic spiral patterns on the undersides of young leaves. The development time is heavily influenced by environmental temperature and relative humidity, allowing the insect to complete multiple generations per year under warm and humid conditions.
Direct damage occurs when larvae and adults feed on plant sap, leading to stunted growth and leaf chlorosis. Furthermore, the excretion of large amounts of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This layer of black fungus inhibits photosynthesis, reduces the marketability of fruits, and in extreme cases, can lead to the total collapse of the plant's health.
Effective control requires an integrated approach. Quarantines and inspection of plant material are critical to preventing new outbreaks. Management practices include:
- Application of selective insecticides to target specific developmental stages.
- Utilizing biological control agents, such as the parasitoid wasp Encarsia smithi.
- Pruning to improve air circulation and canopy management.
- Monitoring populations using yellow sticky traps to time treatments correctly.
