Description
Systematic position The spiny whitefly (Aleurocanthus spinosus) is classified within the order Hemiptera, family Aleyrodidae. As a sap-sucking pest, it is considered a significant threat to agriculture globally, particularly in warmer climates where it can establish large populations on perennial woody plants.
Host range This insect exhibits a strong preference for citrus trees, but it is highly polyphagous. Its host list includes a variety of evergreen shrubs and trees, such as tea, coffee, laurels, and ornamental vines. Due to this diversity, the pest can easily persist in urban gardens and agricultural fields alike.
Biology and life cycle The life cycle progresses through eggs, three larval stages, a pupal stage, and the adult form. Eggs are typically laid in distinctive spiral patterns on the underside of leaves. The pupal stage is protected by a dark, spiny exuvia, which is a key diagnostic feature for identification in the field during regular scouting programs.
Nature of damage and pest status Damage is caused by both adults and nymphs extracting phloem sap from the host plant. A major secondary impact is the production of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold growth. This covering prevents photosynthesis, eventually weakening the plant, causing leaf yellowing, and significantly reducing overall crop quality and yields.
