Description

Aleurocanthus zizyphi is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aleyrodidae family. Commonly known as the jujube whitefly, this species has emerged as a significant pest in subtropical regions, where it poses a constant threat to the health and productivity of various fruit-bearing shrubs and trees.

The primary hosts for this insect are plants from the Rhamnaceae family, specifically the jujube (Ziziphus jujuba). However, the pest is highly adaptable and has been observed feeding on citrus species, pomegranate, and other evergreen plants, often colonizing the underside of leaves to feed on phloem sap.

The biological cycle of Aleurocanthus zizyphi consists of eggs, three larval stages, the puparium stage, and the adult stage. The adults lay eggs in distinct patterns on leaves. Development is heavily influenced by ambient temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the reproductive rate and resulting in multiple overlapping generations per year.

Economic damage is twofold: direct feeding damage causing leaf chlorosis, yellowing, and eventual defoliation, and indirect damage caused by honeydew secretion. This sticky substance promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage, effectively reducing photosynthesis and degrading the aesthetic and market value of the fruit.

Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical controls. Maintaining good plant vigor through proper fertilization and pruning helps plants withstand infestations. When populations exceed economic thresholds, the application of systemic insecticides or insect growth regulators is necessary to break the life cycle and protect the harvest.
