Host Plants and Damage
This pest primarily infests the Norway maple (Acer platanoides). Adults and nymphs feed on the phloem sap on the underside of leaves. The feeding process induces chlorosis, foliage distortion, and, in cases of severe infestation, premature leaf drop. The aesthetic impact is particularly devastating in urban parks and residential landscapes where maple trees are a central feature.
Biology and Life Cycle
Aleurochiton acerinus follows a complex life cycle. It overwinters in the third-instar nymphal stage (puparium) attached to the tree bark. As temperatures rise in spring, adults emerge to mate and oviposit on newly unfolding leaves. Depending on regional climatic conditions, the pest may complete one or two generations per year, with activity peaking in late spring and early summer.
Economic and Ecological Impact
The damage caused by the maple whitefly extends beyond direct sap depletion. Like other whiteflies, it excretes honeydew, a sticky substance that coats the leaves. This serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi, which create black, unsightly patches on the leaves and branches, interfering with the tree's ability to undergo photosynthesis and reducing its overall vigor.
Control Measures
Effective management of the maple whitefly involves several strategies:
- Regular monitoring of the tree canopy for early detection of whitefly nymphs.
- Application of systemic insecticides or horticultural oils during the early season to disrupt the life cycle before populations peak.
- Encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that prey on whitefly nymphs.
- Improving tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation, as stressed trees are significantly more susceptible to outbreaks.
