The Aleurochiton pseudoplatani, commonly known as the sycamore whitefly, is a specialized insect pest within the Hemiptera order and the Aleyrodidae family. It is primarily identified as a threat to various Acer species, often causing significant stress to urban and forest maple populations.
This pest exclusively targets maple trees, exhibiting a strong preference for the underside of leaves for feeding and oviposition. In cases of heavy infestation, the entire crown of the host tree can become colonized, leading to a visible decline in the tree's overall vigor and aesthetic value.
Regarding its biology, the insect typically completes one generation per year. Development is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Winter is survived at the second larval stage, often found protected on the bark or within the litter layer, which serves as a critical period for biological control measures.
