Description

Aleuroclava is a genus of insects belonging to the whitefly family (Aleyrodidae) within the order Hemiptera. These small sap-sucking pests are primarily known in tropical and subtropical climates, but they can become significant agricultural and ornamental pests in greenhouse environments globally.

The host range of Aleuroclava is quite diverse, affecting plants such as citrus, tea bushes, orchids, and various vegetable crops. Because they prefer the undersides of leaves, infestations often go unnoticed until significant population levels are reached, making management challenging.

The biological cycle of this pest involves incomplete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs directly onto the foliage. Upon hatching, the mobile first-instar larvae (crawlers) search for a suitable feeding site. Once they begin feeding, they become sedentary, progressing through several nymphal stages before reaching the puparial stage and eventually emerging as adults.

The primary damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues and extracting cell sap. This leads to reduced plant vigor, yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), and severe cases can cause leaf drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaf surface and hinders essential photosynthetic processes.

Control strategies for Aleuroclava must be integrated to be successful. Key measures include the regular use of yellow sticky traps to monitor adult populations and the application of systemic insecticides when necessary. Biological control is increasingly important, with the release of natural enemies such as parasitoid wasps and predatory bugs proving effective in greenhouse settings.
