Gordonia whitefly

The Gordonia whitefly (Aleuroclava gordoniae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, order Hemiptera. This whitefly species primarily targets specific ornamental evergreen plants, often causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage in nursery environments and landscape settings.

Host plants for this species are primarily within the Theaceae family, including genera such as Gordonia, Camellia, and Stewartia. Its distribution is closely linked to the trade of nursery stock, as the immobile larval stages (puparia) are easily transported on foliage without immediate detection by visual inspection alone.

The life cycle of Aleuroclava gordoniae consists of egg, multiple larval instars, pupal stage, and adult. The puparium is a critical stage for identification; it is found on the underside of leaves. Adult whiteflies are winged and can spread rapidly within a planting area, moving from infested plants to healthy ones to lay eggs.

Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues and extracting phloem sap. A characteristic sign of infestation is the secretion of honeydew, which fosters the growth of sooty mold. This fungus blocks sunlight, disrupting photosynthesis and eventually leading to yellowing of leaves, premature drop, and stunted plant growth.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this whitefly. Effective strategies include:

• frequent scouting of the abaxial (lower) leaf surfaces for signs of puparia;
• application of systemic insecticides to disrupt the feeding cycle of the insects;
• utilization of biological control agents like parasitic wasps;
• proper pruning to improve plant vigor and spray penetration;
• maintaining strict quarantine protocols for incoming plant shipments.
