Murraya whitefly

Systematic position. The insect belongs to the family Aleyrodidae, order Hemiptera. Aleuroclava murrayae is a specialized pest that is frequently documented in tropical and subtropical climates, as well as in greenhouse conditions worldwide, causing significant stress to various host plants.

Host plants. The primary host is Murraya paniculata, but the pest also infests various species within the Rutaceae family, particularly citrus crops. In horticultural settings, it is known to settle on ornamental plants, making it a concern for both commercial fruit production and home gardening.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, four nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Eggs are laid on the underside of leaves. After hatching, the first-instar nymph (crawler) moves to find a suitable feeding site, where it settles and remains immobile throughout its subsequent development stages until it emerges as an adult whitefly.

Damage and severity. Feeding by Aleuroclava murrayae causes leaf chlorosis, curling, and eventually shedding. The production of honeydew is a major secondary issue, as it promotes the growth of sooty mold (black fungus), which not only interferes with photosynthesis but also reduces the aesthetic and commercial quality of the plant.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control of this whitefly. Recommended strategies include:

• Monitoring populations using yellow sticky traps placed near affected plants.
• Pruning and removing heavily infested leaves to reduce the initial pest load.
• Applying systemic insecticides or horticultural oils to disrupt the lifecycle of nymphs.
• Biological control through the release of beneficial insects, such as specific parasitic wasps or predators.
• Maintaining optimal environmental conditions and plant health to enhance resistance against infestations.
