Aleuroclava psidii is a serious pest belonging to the family Aleyrodidae (whiteflies) within the order Hemiptera. Recognized primarily as a significant threat to tropical and subtropical orchards, this insect has gained notoriety for its ability to cause severe economic losses in commercial guava production.

The primary host plant for this species is the guava tree (Psidium guajava), although it has been documented on other related botanical hosts. Its rapid colonization rate and ability to thrive in warm, humid conditions make it a persistent challenge for agricultural managers who struggle to maintain plant vigor in heavily infested areas.

The life cycle of the pest involves egg, three nymphal instars, and adult stages. The initial nymphal stage, often called a crawler, moves across the leaf surface to find a suitable feeding site. Once attached, the nymphs undergo development while secreting a waxy substance, which acts as a protective shield against both environmental stressors and contact-based pesticides.

Feeding damage is characterized by sap extraction from the plant tissues, which weakens the host significantly. A secondary, but equally destructive, effect is the production of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This fungal growth physically blocks sunlight from reaching the leaves, thereby inhibiting photosynthesis and eventually leading to chlorosis, leaf drop, and stunted fruit development.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on both preventive and reactive measures.

  • Implement systematic monitoring using yellow sticky traps to track population density.
  • Apply systemic insecticides that target the vascular system of the plant.
  • Utilize horticultural oils to smother nymphs without harming beneficial predators.
  • Encourage the presence of biological control agents such as parasitoid wasps (e.g., Encarsia spp.).
