Description
The Indian whitefly (Aleurocybotus indicus) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. As a sap-sucking pest, it poses a significant threat to various agricultural crops, specifically impacting rice production systems in warmer climates around the world.
The primary host for this pest is rice (Oryza sativa), although it can also infest various wild grass species. These wild hosts often serve as reservoirs for the pest during the off-season, allowing the whitefly population to persist and migrate into newly planted rice fields, causing recurring infestation problems.
The biological development of this species consists of several life stages: egg, nymphal instars, and adult. The nymphs are sedentary and reside primarily on the underside of leaves, where they extract nutrients from the phloem. Due to their rapid reproductive cycle in high-temperature environments, multiple generations can emerge within a single growing season.
The damage caused by the Indian whitefly includes chlorosis, leaf curling, and stunted plant growth due to constant sap extraction. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the development of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and hinders photosynthesis, ultimately leading to significant yield losses and lower grain quality.
