Aleurocybotus occiduus is a species of whitefly belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, within the order Hemiptera. In agronomy, this insect is recognized as a specific pest of cereal crops, which has gained attention due to its potential impact on grain production in various regions.

This pest primarily infests members of the Poaceae family, including crops like wheat and barley, as well as various wild grasses. The insects are typically found on the underside of leaves, where they feed on phloem sap, thereby depriving the plant of essential nutrients and reducing its overall vigor.

The biology and lifecycle of Aleurocybotus occiduus follow a process of incomplete metamorphosis. Adults lay eggs on the host leaves; these eggs hatch into mobile crawlers. Once the crawlers settle and begin feeding, they undergo several developmental stages, eventually reaching the sedentary pupal stage before emerging as winged adults, which are capable of spreading to adjacent fields.

The damage caused by this whitefly is twofold: direct feeding damage and the secondary effects of their metabolic secretions. Intense sap extraction leads to chlorosis, leaf curling, and stunted plant growth. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and hinders photosynthesis, ultimately leading to significant yield losses and reduced grain quality.
