Description

The genus Aleurodicus belongs to the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. Commonly known as giant whiteflies, these insects are significantly larger than the standard greenhouse whitefly species. Originally native to tropical regions, they have become widespread global pests, frequently introduced into greenhouses and indoor plant collections via international nursery trade.

These pests have a broad host range, damaging various ornamental plants, fruit trees, palms, and tropical foliage. They are especially notorious in botanical gardens and commercial greenhouse operations. Due to their ability to feed on many different plant families, they can establish permanent colonies quickly if they find suitable host conditions.

The life cycle consists of egg, four nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Eggs are usually laid in distinctive circular patterns on the underside of leaves, covered with protective waxy filaments. While the first nymphal instar is mobile, subsequent stages settle in one spot to feed. This sedentary behavior allows them to extract sap efficiently, causing localized damage to the foliage.

Damage is characterized by plant weakening, leaf yellowing, and premature senescence. Like other whiteflies, Aleurodicus excretes large amounts of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus interferes with photosynthesis, reducing the aesthetic and physiological vigor of the plant. In severe infestations, the cumulative stress can result in stunted growth and plant death.

Monitoring should be focused on the underside of leaves during the warmer seasons.
