Aranjoi whitefly

Aleurodicus aranjoi is a significant insect pest belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, order Hemiptera. Known commonly as a type of whitefly, this species is noted for its ability to colonize various host plants, often causing severe physiological stress to both ornamental and agricultural species.

The host range of this pest primarily includes palms, tropical foliage plants, and several fruit-bearing shrubs. It thrives in warm environments, making it a particularly troublesome threat in greenhouses and nurseries where environmental conditions are consistently favorable for its rapid reproduction and spread.

The biological cycle of this insect consists of the egg stage, four nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The larvae are sedentary feeders, anchored to the underside of leaves. They are characterized by the production of waxy, white, flocculent secretions that protect them from desiccation and environmental hazards, making manual control difficult.

Infestation damage manifests as yellowing of leaves, leaf curling, and eventual necrosis. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers leaf surfaces. This accumulation blocks sunlight, severely hindering photosynthesis and overall plant health, which can lead to stunted growth or plant death in extreme cases.

Control strategies for Aleurodicus aranjoi require a multi-faceted IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approach. Effective methods include:

• Regular inspection of the underside of leaves for early detection.
• Usage of yellow sticky traps to monitor and reduce adult populations.
• Application of systemic insecticides that translocate within the plant to kill sap-sucking nymphs.
• Introduction of natural predators or parasitoids such as Encarsia species for biological control.
• Frequent cleaning of surfaces to remove sooty mold and honeydew.
