Description

Aleurodicus coccolobae is a significant insect pest belonging to the family Aleyrodidae under the order Hemiptera. This whitefly species is well-known for its ability to cause severe damage to host plants by feeding on plant sap in tropical and subtropical climates.

The primary hosts for this pest include plants of the genus Coccoloba. However, it can also infest various other ornamental shrubs and trees. Its presence is particularly problematic in nurseries and indoor gardening environments where controlled temperatures allow the insect to reproduce throughout the year.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, four larval (nymphal) stages, and the adult phase. A key feature of the immature stages is the production of white, waxy filaments that cover the body, providing protection against environmental stress and making chemical contact control more difficult.

Damage to plants occurs through the extraction of sap, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and defoliation. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers the leaf surface, which severely inhibits photosynthesis and diminishes the aesthetic value of the plant.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management approach. This includes proper cultural practices, such as pruning affected branches and ensuring good air circulation. Chemical control often involves the application of systemic insecticides, while biological control using parasitoid wasps provides a sustainable alternative for long-term population suppression.
