Description

The Coconut whitefly (Aleurodicus cocois) is a member of the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a serious pest affecting various tropical and subtropical plants, notably palms, causing significant economic damage to coconut plantations worldwide.

The primary host for this pest is the coconut palm, but it also infests a wide range of fruit-bearing and ornamental trees, including avocado, mango, and various citrus species. Due to its high reproductive rate, the pest can quickly establish itself in suitable warm environments.

The life cycle consists of the egg stage, four larval (nymphal) instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid on the underside of leaves, often arranged in distinctive spiral patterns covered by a waxy substance. Each developmental stage is highly dependent on humidity and temperature, facilitating rapid population growth in tropical ecosystems.

Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues and extracting sap. This feeding leads to chlorosis, leaf yellowing, and potential premature drop. Furthermore, the copious production of honeydew encourages the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the overall vigor of the host tree.

Management strategies for this pest involve an integrated approach:

  • Biological control through the introduction or conservation of natural enemies such as Encarsia species.
  • Periodic monitoring of plantations to detect early infestations and prevent rapid spread.
