Description

The Coconut whitefly (Aleurodicus destructor) is a destructive insect belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, order Hemiptera. It is a major pest known for causing severe economic damage to plantations, particularly in tropical environments where it thrives year-round.

The primary host for this pest is the coconut palm, though it also infests bananas, guavas, and numerous ornamental plants. The insects colonize the abaxial (lower) surface of leaves, where they establish dense colonies that are difficult to manage if left unchecked.

The development cycle of Aleurodicus destructor consists of eggs, four larval instars (nymphs), and adults. A distinctive feature is the white, waxy secretion produced by the nymphs, which protects them from predators and environmental stressors, while also acting as a physical barrier against topical insecticides.

The damage caused is twofold: direct sap-sucking leads to chlorosis and stunted plant growth, while the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungal coating disrupts photosynthesis and significantly weakens the host tree, often leading to reduced yield and poor overall plant health.

Effective management strategies include integrated pest management (IPM) practices, such as the augmentation of natural enemies like parasitoid wasps and predatory beetles. Mechanical removal of infested foliage and the judicious application of systemic insecticides remain critical tools for controlling outbreaks in commercial agriculture.
