Description
The Maritime whitefly (Aleurodicus maritimus) is a specialized and destructive plant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. This insect species is characterized by high adaptability to various plant hosts and a specialized morphology that allows it to colonize the leaf surface effectively for sustained feeding.
This pest primarily affects tropical and subtropical plants, including ornamental species, citrus, and various woody plants. In greenhouse environments or areas with high humidity, Aleurodicus maritimus can cause substantial economic losses in vegetable crops by feeding extensively on the abaxial side of the foliage.
The life cycle of this species comprises an egg stage, four nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Both adults and nymphs damage the plants by sucking the cell sap from the plant tissues. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on temperature and humidity: under optimal conditions, the pest can quickly increase its population density, completing several generations within a single growing season.
The damage caused by the maritime whitefly manifests as chlorosis, yellowing, and eventually the wilting of affected leaves. As a result of their feeding, the insects excrete honeydew, which serves as a substrate for the growth of sooty mold. This condition impairs photosynthesis, significantly reducing both the quality and the overall yield of the impacted crops.
Effective management strategies rely on constant monitoring using yellow sticky traps and strict adherence to phytosanitary regulations. When outbreaks occur, an integrated pest management (IPM) approach is recommended, combining systemic and contact insecticides with biological control agents such as natural predators and parasitoids that suppress whitefly populations in controlled environments.
