The porous whitefly (Aleurodicus poriferus) is a significant plant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. Known for its distinct morphological features, this insect poses a major challenge to both commercial nurseries and residential landscape plantings due to its rapid colonization rate.

This species primarily targets various perennial shrubs, ornamental trees, and citrus varieties. The pests tend to aggregate on the abaxial (underside) surface of leaves, which provides them with a sheltered environment for feeding and allows them to remain undetected during the initial stages of an infestation.

The biology of Aleurodicus poriferus follows a typical hemimetabolous development cycle, including eggs, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Both nymphs and adults possess piercing-sucking mouthparts, which they use to extract essential plant fluids, causing significant physiological stress and weakening the host plant's overall health.

Damage is characterized by chlorosis, leaf curl, and premature defoliation. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats leaves and stems in a black, sticky film. This layer inhibits photosynthesis and significantly reduces the marketability and aesthetic value of the affected plants.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this whitefly. Effective strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring with yellow sticky cards to track adult activity.
  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant material.
  • Encouraging or releasing natural enemies such as parasitoid wasps.
  • Applying systemic insecticides or horticultural oils specifically approved for whitefly management.
