Aleurolobus

Aleurolobus is a genus of insects within the whitefly family (Aleyrodidae), belonging to the order Hemiptera. These small, sap-sucking pests pose a significant threat to various plant species, as their presence often goes unnoticed until mass infestation occurs. The most notable species, such as those affecting grapes and citrus, are well-adapted to warm climates.

The pest primarily infests woody and shrub crops, including grapevines, citrus fruits, persimmons, and certain ornamental plants. The parasite prefers to settle on the underside of leaves, where it remains protected from direct sunlight and the impact of many contact-based insecticides, which complicates the treatment of infested plants.

The life cycle of Aleurolobus consists of the egg, nymph (puparium), and adult stages. Unlike the highly mobile adults, the older-stage nymphs are relatively stationary, attaching themselves firmly to the leaf surface. Reproduction occurs over several generations per season, with high humidity and moderately warm temperatures acting as catalysts for rapid population growth.

Damage symptoms include leaf curling, yellowing, and premature leaf drop. While feeding, the pest excretes honeydew, a sticky substance that serves as an ideal substrate for sooty mold growth. This accumulation disrupts photosynthesis, weakens the plant’s overall immunity, and significantly reduces fruit quality and total yield.

Effective control requires an integrated approach combining cultural and chemical practices. Crucial measures include:

• Removal and destruction of heavily infested plant parts.
• Maintenance of clear inter-row spaces to improve air circulation.
• Application of systemic insecticides during vulnerable stages.
