Description

Aleurolobus barodensis is a significant insect pest belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, order Hemiptera. It is widely recognized in agricultural entomology as a primary threat to sugarcane production, capable of causing widespread yield losses if left uncontrolled in suitable climates.

The primary host for this pest is sugarcane. The nymphs and adults congregate on the underside of leaves, piercing the plant tissue to suck phloem sap. Continuous feeding leads to systemic weakness in the plants, stunted growth, and a measurable decrease in sucrose content, which negatively impacts sugar production.

The life cycle of the sugarcane whitefly consists of eggs, several nymphal instars, and adults. After hatching, the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, move across the leaf surface until they anchor themselves to feed. Once attached, they transition into a sessile stage, becoming relatively immobile for the remainder of their development.

The damage caused by this insect is twofold: direct damage due to nutrient extraction and indirect damage through the secretion of honeydew. The honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a dark film on the leaves. This coating blocks sunlight and impairs the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis effectively.
