Aleurolobus marlatti is a significant pest species classified under the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is recognized primarily as a threat to citrus production globally, causing localized outbreaks that require intensive management strategies to prevent crop loss.
This species predominantly targets citrus plants, including sweet orange, lemon, lime, and mandarin varieties. While it shows a strong preference for citrus, it can thrive on a range of evergreen ornamental hosts if conditions are suitable, making its control vital for both agricultural and horticultural environments.
The life cycle of the insect consists of an egg stage, four larval (nymphal) stages, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid on the underside of leaves. Once the mobile first-instar nymphs (crawlers) emerge, they settle to feed and eventually form a characteristic flattened, waxy pupal case that protects them from environmental stressors and pesticides.
The damage caused by Aleurolobus marlatti is twofold: direct sap-sucking leads to leaf chlorosis and premature leaf drop, while indirect damage stems from the secretion of honeydew. This substance promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blankets the leaves and fruit, significantly reducing photosynthesis and marketability.
