Description

Aleuronudus is a genus of whiteflies belonging to the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. These small insects are primarily distributed in tropical and subtropical regions, but they frequently pose significant challenges in greenhouses and botanical gardens worldwide, where they find stable environmental conditions.

This pest mainly infests woody and ornamental species, including citrus plants, ficus, and various tropical flora. Due to their ability to feed on a wide range of hosts, Aleuronudus species can cause considerable economic losses in nursery production and ornamental plant trade.

The life cycle of Aleuronudus follows a pattern common to whiteflies, consisting of an egg stage, four nymphal instars, and an adult stage. Nymphs typically reside on the underside of leaves and secrete a characteristic waxy layer, which acts as a physical barrier, protecting them against conventional insecticide applications.

Damage caused by Aleuronudus includes sap extraction, leading to severe leaf curling, stunted plant growth, and premature senescence. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage, interferes with gas exchange, and significantly diminishes the aesthetic and commercial value of the crop.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Aleuronudus. This includes the use of yellow sticky cards for early detection, the application of systemic insecticides, and the implementation of biological control programs using parasitoids or predatory mites. Maintaining high sanitary standards in greenhouses is critical to prevent population outbreaks.
