Description

Aleuropleurocelus is a genus of insects belonging to the whitefly family (Aleyrodidae) within the order Hemiptera. These minute pests pose a significant threat to a variety of ornamental and agricultural crops, as their presence often goes unnoticed until mass infestation occurs. Unlike other whitefly species, they possess unique puparial morphology, which complicates accurate species identification in field conditions.

The host plant range for this genus includes diverse woody and shrub species, as well as several herbaceous plants. Significant damage is often inflicted on members of the Rosaceae and Lauraceae families, with pests colonizing the underside of leaf blades. Damage is most commonly observed in greenhouses, nurseries, and regions with warm climates where these insects can breed continuously throughout the year.

The biology of this pest is closely linked to temperature and humidity levels. Females deposit eggs on young foliage, from which mobile crawler larvae emerge. Once settled on the leaf surface, the larva enters a stationary stage, developing into a flattened puparium. The duration of the life cycle from egg to adult is highly dependent on ambient conditions, with high humidity and moderate heat significantly accelerating reproduction rates.

The harmfulness of the pest is demonstrated by the direct extraction of cell sap, which leads to chlorosis, premature leaf drop, and general stunted plant growth. In addition to mechanical damage, these insects excrete honeydew—a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This layer blocks photosynthesis and significantly reduces both the aesthetic quality of the crop and its overall market value.

Control measures require an integrated pest management approach combining chemical and biological strategies. Effective control is often achieved using systemic neonicotinoid insecticides and insect growth regulators that disrupt larval development. In controlled environments, the use of biological control agents such as Encarsia species is recommended, alongside regular monitoring with yellow sticky traps to ensure early detection of emerging populations.
