Description
The Aleuropleurocelus annonae, commonly referred to as the Annona whitefly, is a specialized insect species belonging to the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. It has gained attention among horticulturists due to its specific host preference and the potential impact it can have on fruit production in tropical and subtropical regions.
The primary hosts for this pest include members of the Annonaceae family, such as cherimoya and soursop. These whiteflies tend to infest the abaxial (lower) surface of the leaves, where they establish colonies and extract sap, which serves as their primary nutritional source throughout their development.
The life cycle of the species consists of eggs, four nymphal instars, and adults. The transition from the motile first-instar crawler to the sessile subsequent nymphal stages is a critical biological feature. This sessile phase makes them highly resistant to superficial contact pesticides, necessitating more strategic intervention methods.
The damage caused by the Annona whitefly is twofold. Firstly, the direct removal of nutrients weakens the plant and stunts vegetative growth. Secondly, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a dark film on the leaves. This mold inhibits photosynthesis and can significantly reduce the marketability and yield quality of the fruit.
