Mexican whitefly

Aleuropleurocelus mexicanus is a species of whitefly belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. As a specialized agricultural pest, it primarily targets specific woody host plants, making it a subject of concern for commercial growers in regions where its host plants are cultivated.

The primary host for this whitefly is the avocado tree (Persea americana). The pest colonizes the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves, where it can remain undetected for long periods while continuously feeding on the plant's vascular sap, causing gradual decline in the tree's health.

The biology of this species involves a complex developmental cycle. The nymphs go through several instars, during which they remain attached to the leaf surface. As they mature into the puparial stage, they become stationary. The adults emerge and spread to adjacent leaves or trees, allowing the infestation to expand rapidly if not managed correctly.

Damage to the plant is twofold: direct feeding causes chlorosis and leaf drop, reducing the tree's vigor and photosynthetic capacity. Indirect damage is caused by the excretion of honeydew, which leads to the growth of sooty mold. This mold blocks light to the leaf surface, further suppressing the plant's metabolism and fruit development.

Management strategies for this pest require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This involves:

• Routine scouting using yellow sticky traps to detect population spikes.
• Biological control using natural predators or parasitoids.
• Application of horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps to disrupt the nymphal stages.
• Systemic chemical applications during critical growth stages when justified by scouting results.

Effective control also depends on good cultural practices, such as maintaining proper tree spacing to improve airflow and monitoring nearby weed hosts that might harbor populations of the whitefly during the off-season.
