Systematic position: Aleurothrixus is a genus of insects within the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. The most economically significant species, Aleurothrixus floccosus, is widely known as the woolly whitefly due to the dense, cotton-like waxy filaments that cover the larvae, providing protection against predators and environmental factors.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets species within the genus Citrus, including lemons, oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits. While it prefers citrus, it can occasionally thrive on other evergreen shrubs in warm climates. Infestations are often most severe in regions with high humidity and moderate temperatures, which favor rapid population growth.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, four nymphal instars, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the underside of young leaves, often arranging them in distinct circles. Once the eggs hatch, the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, search for a feeding site. Subsequent nymphal stages are sedentary, feeding exclusively on plant sap while producing the characteristic white waxy excretion.

Damage and severity: The primary injury is caused by direct sap extraction, leading to chlorosis, stunted leaf growth, and premature leaf drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the foliage in a thick black layer. This prevents photosynthesis and significantly lowers the aesthetic and market value of the fruit, often leading to total crop loss if left unmanaged.
