Description

The citrus woolly whitefly (Aleurothrixus floccosus) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. Recognized as a serious threat to citrus production worldwide, this insect derives its name from the dense, waxy, hair-like filaments produced by the nymphs, which resemble tufts of wool on the underside of leaves.

The primary hosts of this pest are citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. While citrus is the preferred host, infestations can occasionally spill over into other evergreen plants in highly favorable conditions. Due to its rapid reproductive cycle, the species can establish severe infestations within a short period, particularly in humid, warm subtropical environments.

The life cycle consists of the egg stage, three larval instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in circular patterns on the undersides of young leaves. Once the nymphs hatch, they migrate briefly before settling down to feed. The subsequent stages are sedentary and protected by the characteristic waxy secretions, which act as a physical barrier against natural predators and chemical pesticides.

Damage to the host plant is twofold: direct sap-feeding causes nutrient depletion, leaf yellowing, and premature senescence, while the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This dark, fungal layer covers the foliage, significantly reducing photosynthesis and transpiration. In severe cases, tree health declines rapidly, fruit quality drops, and young trees may suffer stunted growth or mortality.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Aleurothrixus floccosus. Chemical control typically involves systemic insecticides or horticultural oils that disrupt the pest's respiration. However, the most effective long-term solution is biological control, specifically the introduction of the parasitoid wasp Cales noacki, which has proven highly successful in suppressing whitefly populations below economic injury levels.
