Woolly whitefly

The woolly whitefly (Aleurothrixus howardi) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. Primarily found in subtropical regions, this insect causes serious problems for citrus production by forming dense colonies on the underside of leaves, which leads to plant stress and yield reduction.

Citrus species, including oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, are the primary hosts for this pest. Although it prefers citrus, the woolly whitefly can infest other broad-leaved evergreen plants, making it a persistent challenge for farmers who must manage its population across various agricultural landscapes.

The life cycle of the woolly whitefly includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. The nymphs are particularly noteworthy for producing copious amounts of white, waxy filaments that resemble wool, which provide physical protection against both environmental hazards and some chemical applications, complicating conventional control efforts.

Damage is caused both directly and indirectly. Direct damage occurs as the insects feed on plant phloem, draining essential nutrients. Indirect damage is caused by the secretion of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus blocks sunlight and hinders photosynthesis, while also reducing the marketability of the fruits themselves.

• Implement integrated pest management (IPM) to prioritize ecological sustainability.
• Release natural predators, such as the parasitic wasp Cales noacki, which is highly effective in regulating populations.
• Utilize yellow sticky traps to monitor adult whitefly activity levels and time pesticide applications.
• Apply horticultural oils or selective insecticides only when necessary, targeting the most vulnerable mobile crawler stages.
