Description
The genus Aleurotrachelus belongs to the Aleyrodidae family, commonly known as whiteflies, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are recognized as significant pests that affect a wide array of botanical species, utilizing piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant phloem.
These pests primarily target citrus trees, tropical ornamental plants, and various broad-leaved crops. The ability of Aleurotrachelus to colonize the underside of leaves makes them particularly difficult to detect in the early stages of infestation, allowing populations to establish themselves securely.
The life cycle encompasses the egg stage, four larval instars, and the adult stage. The larval stages involve the development of a sessile puparium-like structure, which provides the insect with protection against environmental stressors and, to some extent, traditional chemical applications.
Visible damage is often identified by chlorotic spotting, leaf yellowing, and stunted plant development. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a dark fungal layer on the surface of the plant, significantly impeding photosynthesis and marketability.
Effective control measures require an integrated approach (IPM). Key strategies include maintaining high standards of greenhouse hygiene, monitoring with sticky traps, and the strategic application of insecticides. Biological control, such as introducing parasitic wasps or predatory mites, remains one of the most sustainable solutions for managing these populations.
