Aleurotrachelus camelliae is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It primarily targets ornamental plants, with a specific preference for species within the genus Camellia, often causing severe economic losses in nursery production and greenhouse environments.
This species is highly host-specific, primarily infesting the foliage of Camellia plants. The presence of these insects is often detected by the appearance of dense white to yellowish colonies on the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves, where they feed continuously on plant sap.
The biology of the Camellia whitefly involves several developmental stages, including eggs, nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The nymphs secrete a waxy substance that creates a protective shield, rendering them resistant to many standard topical treatments. This characteristic makes them particularly challenging to eradicate without a systemic approach.
