Dryandra whitefly

Aleurotrachelus dryandrae is a specialized insect species within the Aleyrodidae family, part of the order Hemiptera. This pest is a significant concern for horticultural specialists and gardeners, as it targets specific ornamental flora, often causing severe physiological stress to infested specimens.

The host range of the Dryandra whitefly primarily includes species from the Proteaceae family, particularly the Dryandra genus. These plants often serve as primary reservoirs for the pest, though it can potentially spread to other susceptible ornamental trees and shrubs in close proximity, especially under sheltered or greenhouse conditions.

The biology of this whitefly species follows a typical hemipteran life cycle: eggs, nymphs (puparia), and adults. Adults lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the nymphs (crawlers) move to find suitable feeding sites, where they eventually attach and begin feeding on plant sap for the remainder of their developmental stages.

Damage is characterized by chlorosis, leaf curl, and stunted growth. A major indirect effect of the infestation is the secretion of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This mold accumulation blocks sunlight, hinders the plant's photosynthetic capability, and severely reduces the aesthetic value of the ornamental vegetation.

To manage and control the Dryandra whitefly, the following strategies should be implemented:

• Regular monitoring of plant foliage using sticky yellow traps to detect adult activity.
• Pruning and disposing of heavily infested plant parts to reduce the localized population.
• Application of systemic insecticides, such as neonicotinoids, when infestation levels reach the economic threshold.
• Integration of biological control, specifically utilizing parasitoid wasps known to predate on Aleyrodidae nymphs.
