Description
Systematic position. Aleurotuba is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae (whiteflies). These small insects are often overlooked in the early stages of infestation due to their minute size and their preference for feeding on the underside of plant leaves.
Affected crops. This genus of pests primarily infests ornamental, forest, and certain fruit-bearing species, with a particular affinity for plants in the Lauraceae and Myrtaceae families. Under greenhouse conditions or in warmer climates, their range of host plants can expand to include a diverse variety of indoor and ornamental species.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Aleurotuba consists of the egg stage, four nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Adult individuals are capable of active flight, which facilitates the rapid spread of the population within greenhouses or garden plots. The speed of their development is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically temperature and humidity levels.
Nature of damage. These pests feed on plant cell sap, which impairs photosynthetic processes and weakens the plant's overall vitality. Furthermore, the nymphs excrete "honeydew," a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold, which can severely compromise the aesthetic quality and physiological health of the plant.
Protection measures. Effective control of Aleurotuba requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Recommended strategies include:
- Deployment of yellow sticky traps for monitoring and trapping adult populations.
- Application of systemic insecticides during the peak larval growth period.
