Anthurium whitefly

Systematic position: The anthurium whitefly (Aleurotulus anthuricola) is a member of the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. It is a specialized pest frequently encountered in commercial greenhouses and residential collections, known for its ability to rapidly establish colonies on susceptible host plants, causing damage primarily to the foliage of decorative species.

Host plants: As the name implies, this whitefly primarily targets plants of the genus Anthurium. However, it is not strictly limited to this genus and can infest other Araceae species growing in warm, humid greenhouse environments. Its presence is particularly challenging for indoor plant collections due to the fast reproductive cycle of the insect.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Aleurotulus anthuricola consists of egg, nymph (larval), and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the mobile first-instar larvae begin feeding on plant sap. Subsequent nymphal stages are sessile and remain attached to the leaf, continuing the feeding process and causing localized stress to the plant tissue.

Damage and economic impact: The damage caused by the anthurium whitefly is both direct and indirect. Direct damage occurs through sap depletion, leading to yellowing, curling, and stunting of the leaves. Indirect damage is caused by the accumulation of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi. This black fungal growth inhibits photosynthesis and significantly reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of the plants.

Control measures: Effective management of the anthurium whitefly requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Regular inspection of the undersides of leaves to detect early signs of infestation.
• Deployment of yellow sticky traps to capture adults and monitor population density.
• Application of systemic insecticides that provide long-lasting protection by translocating within the plant.
• Implementation of biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps or predators.
• Strict quarantine procedures for newly acquired plants to prevent the introduction of the pest into the greenhouse.
