Carapiai whitefly

Aleurotulus carapiai is a species of whitefly belonging to the family Aleyrodidae, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural ecosystems, known for their ability to rapidly establish colonies on host plants and cause localized damage to plant tissues through sap-feeding.

The host range of Aleurotulus carapiai includes various flowering plants and specific crop species. They primarily colonize the abaxial surface (underside) of leaves, which provides protection from direct sunlight and environmental stressors. This habitat preference makes early detection particularly challenging for field scouts.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, three nymphal instars, and an adult stage. The nymphal stages are sedentary, securely fixed to the leaf surface to feed efficiently. As they consume plant sap, they excrete honeydew, a sugary substance that is a hallmark of whitefly infestation and a precursor to secondary plant health issues.

The damage caused by Aleurotulus carapiai is twofold: direct and indirect. Direct damage occurs through the removal of plant nutrients, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and general plant decline. Indirect damage is caused by the accumulation of honeydew, which leads to the growth of sooty mold, preventing photosynthesis and decreasing the market value of the produce.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to avoid total reliance on chemical pesticides. Primary control methods include:

• Maintaining high levels of field hygiene to remove reservoir weeds.
• Using yellow sticky traps for monitoring population density.
• Deploying biological control agents like predatory mites or parasitic wasps.
