Cabbage whitefly

The cabbage whitefly (Aleyrodes proletella) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. Although small in size, this insect is a significant agricultural pest that thrives in warm, humid conditions, often causing severe damage to leafy vegetable crops in both home gardens and commercial farms.

This pest primarily attacks members of the Brassicaceae family. Its favorite hosts include various types of cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower. It also colonizes several wild weed species, which often serve as a bridge for the pest to move into cultivated fields during the growing season.

The lifecycle consists of four developmental stages: egg, four larval instars (nymphs), and the winged adult. Females deposit eggs on the underside of leaves. After hatching, the first-instar larvae, known as crawlers, move briefly before settling and feeding. Under optimal conditions, the whitefly can produce multiple overlapping generations within a single year.

The primary damage is caused by both larvae and adults sucking sap from the plant, which leads to leaf yellowing, stunting, and overall plant decline. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew encourages the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and reduces the efficiency of photosynthesis, significantly compromising the quality and yield of the harvest.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include:

• Maintaining weed-free borders to eliminate alternative food sources.
• Monitoring populations with yellow sticky cards to time interventions accurately.
• Encouraging natural predators such as ladybugs and lacewings.
• Applying horticultural oils or soap sprays early in the infestation to manage crawler populations.
