Description

Systematic position. The genus Allolobophora belongs to the order Haplotaxida, family Lumbricidae. While most earthworms are traditionally viewed as beneficial soil architects, specific species of the genus Allolobophora can act as significant pests, attacking the delicate root systems and seedlings of various cultivated plants.

Crops affected. This pest primarily targets vegetable crops, including potatoes, carrots, and sugar beets, as well as young nursery stock. They are especially prevalent in moist environments rich in organic matter, where they find both shelter and an abundant food source near plant roots.

Biology and life cycle. Allolobophora are hermaphroditic organisms that reproduce by depositing cocoons in the upper, moist layers of the soil. Their life cycle progresses through the egg, juvenile, and adult stages. Under optimal conditions characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures, the population density can rise rapidly, leading to significant infestations within the root zone.

Character of damage and harmfulness. The primary damage involves the consumption of the root epidermis and fine root hairs. This feeding activity disrupts the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, chlorosis, and potential plant mortality. Furthermore, physical wounds on the roots serve as entry points for secondary soil-borne pathogens, which may lead to systemic root rot.

Protection measures. Effective management of this pest requires an integrated agronomic approach:

  • Implementing crop rotation strategies to minimize population buildup.
  • Frequent soil cultivation and harrowing to disrupt the earthworm's galleries and nests.
  • Managing soil moisture levels to avoid excessive dampness that favors worm activity.
  • Applying specific soil-active insecticides in cases of severe economic threshold breach.
