Description
The genus Eisenia belongs to the Lumbricidae family, order Crassiclitellata. Although commonly recognized for their role in soil fertility and vermicomposting, these earthworms can occasionally act as opportunistic pests, particularly in greenhouses, nurseries, and potted plant production systems.
They typically damage young crops, sensitive seedlings, and newly rooted cuttings. Damage occurs when the concentration of organic matter in the substrate is high, causing the worms to move through the root zone, disturbing the soil structure around the roots and causing dehydration or mechanical lesions.
The biological cycle of these worms is characterized by rapid reproduction through the production of cocoons. In controlled environments with constant moisture and food availability, the population density of Eisenia can increase exponentially, leading to intensified competition for space and resources within the substrate.
The harm caused by these worms includes the disruption of the root-soil interface. By creating galleries in the soil, they cause root exposure and loss of soil contact, which inhibits nutrient uptake. Furthermore, secondary bacterial or fungal infections often colonize the mechanical wounds left on the plant roots.
Integrated pest management strategies involve strict substrate sanitation, such as heat treatment or steaming of potting mixes to eliminate cocoons and adults. Growers should also ensure proper composting of organic materials and utilize controlled irrigation to avoid creating conditions that excessively attract earthworm activity near the root zone.
