Eisenia andrei is an earthworm species belonging to the family Lumbricidae (order Crassiclitellata). While widely appreciated for composting and soil aeration, in professional greenhouse environments and container plant production, they are occasionally classified as pests due to their impact on sensitive root systems and sterile growing media.
The primary hosts affected by Eisenia andrei are seedlings, potted ornamental plants, and crops grown in artificial substrates. In environments where the soil volume is restricted, their tunneling behavior disrupts the rhizosphere, leading to mechanical damage to delicate root hairs and stunted growth.
Regarding biology, these worms exhibit a high reproductive rate, making them prolific in moist, organic-rich environments. They thrive within a temperature range of 15°C to 25°C.
