Description

Lumbricus rubellus belongs to the order Haplotaxida and the family Lumbricidae. While typically regarded as beneficial for soil aeration and nutrient cycling in open fields, in greenhouses and container nurseries, this earthworm can become a significant pest to vulnerable plant life.

The biology of this species is characterized by high adaptability to organic-rich substrates. They reproduce through cocoons, which hatch into juveniles that rapidly colonize available soil. Under stable greenhouse conditions, their population can grow quickly, often exhausting available organic food sources and turning their attention to living root tissues.

This pest primarily affects seedlings, tender transplants, and cuttings that are in the process of rooting. In confined spaces like pots or seed trays, the physical activity of the worms disturbs the soil structure around the roots, causing young plants to lose their anchorage and ability to take up water and nutrients.

The damage caused by Lumbricus rubellus includes the destruction of fine root hairs and the consumption of young feeder roots. This not only stunts plant growth but also creates open wounds that are highly susceptible to secondary infections, such as root rot caused by fungi and opportunistic bacteria.

To manage this pest in controlled environments, it is essential to use sterilized potting media and avoid adding raw organic matter to the substrate. Chemical control measures may be used in extreme cases, but focus should be on cultural practices like adjusting moisture levels and inspecting soil before use to prevent accidental introduction.
