Description

Taxonomic classification. The genus Amblyptilia belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pterophoridae, commonly known as plume moths. These insects are distinguished by their uniquely modified, feathered wings, which are deeply cleft into lobes, providing them with a distinct morphological appearance among other small moths.

Affected crops and economic importance. Amblyptilia species are known pests of various Lamiaceae plants, especially mint, and can also impact berry crops like strawberries and currants. They are considered secondary pests that can reach significant populations, leading to reduced leaf biomass and flower bud abortion, which directly affects the commercial quality of herbs and fruits.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle typically consists of multiple generations per season. Adult moths overwinter in sheltered locations, such as under leaf litter or within vegetation debris. Upon the arrival of spring, they emerge to mate and lay eggs on the host plants. The larvae pass through several instars before pupating on the leaves, often sheltered by a silk web they spin to protect themselves.

Damage patterns. Larval feeding begins on the surface of the leaves, where they create small, skeletonized patches. As the larvae mature, they consume larger portions of leaf tissue and often bore into buds and terminal shoots. This feeding behavior causes plant stunting, flower deformation, and in severe cases, the destruction of apical growing points, which stops plant development.
