Description

Diacrotricha fasciola, widely known as the carambola fruit borer, is a destructive moth species within the family Pterophoridae (plume moths). This pest is a major threat to starfruit (Averrhoa carambola) production globally, often causing significant yield losses if left uncontrolled during the flowering and fruiting seasons.

The primary host for this pest is the starfruit tree. The larvae exhibit a highly specialized feeding habit, boring directly into the developing flower buds and young fruits. This behavior causes them to drop prematurely from the tree, leading to severe crop depletion and reducing the overall quality of any harvested fruit.

Regarding its biology, the moth completes its life cycle in synchronization with the phenology of the starfruit plant. Adult females deposit eggs on the surface of floral parts. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the fruit, which makes them extremely difficult to reach with standard contact-based pest control methods.

Damage assessment shows that infested fruits display small entry holes often surrounded by larval frass. As the larvae mature within the fruit, they destroy the interior pulp. This physical damage not only degrades the fruit quality but also serves as an entry point for secondary bacterial and fungal infections, resulting in total rot of the produce.
