Description

The rose plume moth (Cnaemidophorus rhododactylus) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Pterophoridae, order Lepidoptera. It is well-known among horticulturists for its ability to target rose bushes specifically, often causing significant aesthetic damage to floral displays.

The host range of this moth is primarily confined to the genus Rosa. While wild roses are frequently colonized, garden hybrids are equally susceptible, making the insect a notable concern in professional floriculture and home rose gardens alike.

The biological cycle follows a seasonal pattern where the species overwinters as young larvae. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae emerge from their overwintering sites, often near the buds, and begin feeding immediately on the developing vegetative and reproductive parts of the rose plant.

Damage is characterized by webbed leaves and buds. The larvae bore into the developing flower buds, consuming the internal tissues. This typically results in ruined blooms, asymmetrical flower development, or the complete failure of the bud to open, significantly reducing the visual quality of the plants.

Recommended strategies include the manual removal and destruction of infested buds and webbed foliage. If infestations are severe, chemical control using targeted insecticides should be timed with the emergence of larvae in the spring.
