Description

Amitermes is a genus of termites belonging to the order Blattodea and the family Termitidae. These social insects form complex colonies with highly specialized castes, including workers, soldiers, and reproductives. Unlike many other termite genera, Amitermes species often construct conspicuous epigeal mounds or deep subterranean galleries, making detection and management complex.

These pests cause significant economic damage to a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals such as maize and sorghum, sugarcane, cotton, and various fruit trees. Amitermes are particularly destructive in arid and semi-arid regions, where they act as primary decomposers but shift their focus to living plant tissues when natural sources of cellulose are scarce.

The biology of Amitermes is adapted for survival in harsh climates. Their life cycle consists of eggs, larvae, and nymphal stages that differentiate into the respective castes. Colony expansion usually occurs through swarming, where alates (winged reproductives) fly to new locations to establish colonies in the soil or decaying wood structures.

The damage caused by Amitermes is cryptic, often occurring below the ground or inside stems. They consume root systems and internal plant vascular tissues, replacing them with soil packed inside the tunnels. This disrupts the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients, leading to sudden wilting and plant death.
