Systematic position: The genus Ancistrotermes belongs to the order Isoptera and the family Termitidae. These insects are classified as higher termites and are significant pests in tropical and subtropical agroecosystems, particularly across the African continent, where they thrive in various soil types.
Host plants: Ancistrotermes is a polyphagous pest capable of attacking a wide variety of cultivated crops. They are particularly destructive to cereals like maize, sorghum, and millet, as well as cash crops including cotton, sugarcane, and cassava. They also frequently attack young saplings in tree nurseries and orchards, causing severe economic losses.
Biology and life cycle: These termites live in complex underground colonies featuring distinct castes, including workers, soldiers, and reproductives. Their life cycle involves the establishment of new colonies through nuptial flights, followed by the development of worker populations that forage extensively for cellulose-based food sources. Unlike mound-building termites, their colonies are often cryptic, making detection challenging.
Damage and economic significance: The damage is primarily subterranean. Workers feed on the root systems and the base of stems, cutting off water and nutrient transport to the aerial parts of the plant. This leads to wilting, stunting, and the death of the plant. In many regions, Ancistrotermes is considered one of the primary limiting factors for successful crop production, especially during dry seasons when plant defenses are lower.
