The Florida termite (Amitermes floridensis) is a species within the order Isoptera, family Termitidae. As a specialized wood-feeding insect, it plays a complex role in the ecosystem, yet it becomes a significant pest when its activities overlap with cultivated landscapes, nurseries, and agricultural timber structures.
This pest targets a variety of woody plants, including garden trees and shrubs. By attacking the root systems and the heartwood of plants, the Florida termite disrupts the transport of water and nutrients. Such damage is particularly devastating to young or compromised plants, often leading to total loss of the specimen.
The biology of Amitermes floridensis is characterized by highly organized social colonies. The lifecycle includes a queen, reproductive swarmers, workers, and soldiers. The workers are responsible for foraging and the construction of shelter tubes, which allow them to move between their underground nests and food sources while remaining protected from desiccation and predators.
The severity of the damage is often underestimated due to the termites' cryptic behavior. They consume the internal structure of wood while leaving the outer bark layer intact. As a result, growers may notice signs of infestation only when the plant begins to show systemic distress, such as foliage yellowing, wilting, or structural collapse under wind load.
