The compass termite (Amitermes meridionalis) is a species within the order Isoptera and the family Termitidae. It is widely recognized for its distinctive architectural ability to build termite mounds oriented along a north-south axis, which helps regulate the internal temperature of the colony, earning it the common name of compass termite.

In its native Australian habitat, the species feeds primarily on dry wood, grasses, and decaying plant matter. From an agronomic perspective, it poses a threat to the root systems of eucalyptus trees, various shrubs, and other woody perennials. By consuming cellulose, these termites compromise the structural integrity of the roots, leading to plant stress and potential death.

The biology of Amitermes meridionalis involves a highly developed social structure composed of castes including workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals. Their lifecycle progresses through egg, nymph, and adult stages. These colonies are long-lived and expand their underground foraging network extensively, making it challenging to detect infestations until significant damage has already occurred.

The damage is characterized by the excavation of galleries within the roots and lower trunks of plants. Workers replace internal plant tissues with a mixture of soil and excrement. Affected plants may appear healthy from the outside until severe damage causes sudden wilting, nutrient deficiency, or structural failure, resulting in the plant falling over during minor weather events.

Protection measures include the deployment of bait stations containing slow-acting insecticidal compounds that are transported by foraging termites back to the nest to eliminate the colony. Chemical soil barriers are also effective in protecting valuable crops. Best practices involve:

  • Removing dead wood and organic debris from the field.
  • Monitoring soil around root zones for subterranean tunnels.
  • Applying systemic insecticides specifically labeled for termite control.
  • Maintaining soil moisture levels to deter colony expansion.
