Pistachio soft scale

Systematic position: The Pistachio soft scale (Anapulvinaria pistaciae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae (soft scales). This species is a specialized pest that causes significant economic damage to pistachio plantations, particularly in arid and semi-arid climates where the environmental conditions are optimal for its rapid development.

Host plants: The primary host is the true pistachio (Pistacia vera). However, it is a polyphagous pest that can also infest other Pistacia species and occasionally broadens its host range to include almond, apricot, and plum trees when environmental stress or high pest density is present in the surrounding orchards.

Biology and life cycle: The pest typically completes one generation per year. It overwinters as second-instar nymphs on the bark of branches and trunks. In spring, as temperatures rise, these nymphs mature into adult females. By late spring, females secrete white, cottony ovisacs to protect their eggs. Hatching occurs in early summer, producing crawlers that migrate to leaves to begin feeding.

Damage and economic impact: Both nymphs and adults feed by extracting plant sap from the vascular tissues. This feeding causes branch dieback, leaf chlorosis, and premature senescence. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the foliage, blocks stomata, and severely restricts the tree's photosynthetic capacity, leading to significant yield losses.

Control measures: Management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include:

• Pruning and removal of heavily infested wood to reduce the overwintering population.
• Application of systemic insecticides timed specifically with the crawler emergence period to maximize efficacy.
• Promotion of biological control agents, such as predatory beetles and parasitoid wasps, which play a crucial role in regulating populations.
• Regular scouting of orchard trees during the early season to detect egg-laying activity before outbreaks occur.
