Austrolecanium

Austrolecanium is a genus of scale insects belonging to the family Coccidae, commonly known as soft scales, within the order Hemiptera. Unlike armored scales, these insects do not produce a separate waxy shield; instead, the protective covering is an integral part of the insect's dorsal integument, which becomes hardened as the female matures.

This genus primarily infests a variety of woody plants and shrubs, frequently impacting ornamental species and forest trees. In controlled environments such as greenhouses, Austrolecanium can become a persistent pest, colonizing foliage and twigs and leading to significant physiological stress in the host plants if left untreated.

The biological cycle of this pest follows a pattern typical of Coccidae. Females deposit eggs beneath their bodies. Upon hatching, the first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, emerge. These crawlers are highly mobile and are the primary agents of dispersal, moving across the plant surface or drifting to neighboring plants via wind currents to establish new feeding sites.

The damage caused by Austrolecanium is a result of their phloem-feeding habit.

Regular monitoring and pruning of heavily infected branches are essential to limit the population spread.
