Caper scale

Austrolecanium cappari

Description

Systematic position. The caper scale (Austrolecanium cappari) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae (soft scales). It is a specialized pest that has evolved to thrive specifically on plants belonging to the Capparaceae family, exhibiting high host specificity.

Host plants. The primary host for this insect is the caper bush (Capparis spinosa). The insect prefers the woody stems and the underside of the thick, waxy leaves of the caper plant, where it remains stationary for most of its life cycle after initial colonization.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves distinct stages including eggs, mobile nymphs (crawlers), and sessile adults. Females develop a hard, protective covering that serves as a shield against environmental factors. The crawler stage is the most critical period for population dispersal, as the young insects move to find optimal feeding sites before settling down to develop their protective shells.

Nature of damage and harm. The damage is caused by the insertion of piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissue to extract phloem sap. This feeding process weakens the plant significantly. Additionally, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaves and hinders photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor and decreased flower bud production.

Control measures. Managing Austrolecanium cappari requires a well-timed approach focused on the vulnerable crawler phase. Recommended practices include:

  • Monitoring crop surfaces during the early growing season.
  • Applying systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant.
  • Utilizing horticultural oils during the nymph stages to disrupt respiration.
  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the initial pest population.
  • Promoting biological control through the introduction of natural predators like ladybirds or parasitic wasps.
