Ancylostomia is a genus of insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Pyralidae. Members of this genus, most notably Ancylostomia stercorea, are recognized as specialized pests that primarily target the reproductive structures of legume plants, causing significant challenges in agricultural production.
The host range of this pest consists mainly of species within the Fabaceae family. They are particularly destructive to crops like pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan). The larvae infest the pods, where they feed on the developing seeds, making these plants the primary focus for pest management strategies in affected regions.
The biology of Ancylostomia is synchronized with the phenology of its host plants. Adult moths lay eggs on flowers or young pods. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the pod and begin feeding on the seeds inside. The larval stage is completed within the pod, where they eventually pupate, protected from environmental factors and natural predators until the adult moth emerges.
The damage caused by Ancylostomia is categorized by seed destruction and reduced pod quality. Infested pods often show signs of exit holes, internal galleries filled with larval frass, and webbing.
